Santa Barbara Man Arrested on Multiple Sexual Abuse Charges

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's detectives have arrested a 42-year-old Santa Barbara man in connection with a child sexual abuse investigation, officials announced. Joshua Daniel Luft was taken into custody on April 28 following allegations involving a juvenile female that reportedly occurred on March 28 in the Paradise Canyon area.

According to the Sheriff's Office, detectives began investigating after receiving a report of lewd acts involving a juvenile female that allegedly occurred on Sunshine Lane in the Paradise Canyon area. Luft was booked at the Main Jail on felony charges including lewd acts with a child, sexual battery, and annoying or molesting a child under 18 years of age.

Suspect Released on Bail, Investigation Continues

Luft has since been released after posting $25,000 bail, according to multiple news outlets covering the case. However, as the investigation has progressed, detectives have developed information leading them to believe there may be additional victims associated with Luft.

The Paradise Canyon area, where the alleged incident occurred, is a rural residential community accessed via Paradise Road from Highway 154. Sunshine Lane is home to several cabin properties in a wooded setting, approximately 25 minutes from Santa Barbara's beaches.

Authorities Seek Additional Victims

Detectives are encouraging anyone with information or anyone who may have had contact with the suspect under concerning circumstances to come forward. "The Sheriff's Office is aware that survivors of sexual assault and abuse are often reluctant to come forward for many different reasons," officials stated in their press release. "We have many resources available regardless of your decision to participate in a criminal investigation."

Local Support Services Available

Sheriff's detectives coordinate closely with the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office Victim-Witness Program to ensure the needs of survivors are not overshadowed by the focus on the investigation and prosecution. Victim advocates are available to keep survivors informed and supported throughout the criminal justice process.

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office partners with Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA), which provides confidential support services including a 24-hour hotline at (805) 564-3696, legal and medical advocacy, and counseling.

STESA is a private nonprofit organization that has provided counseling, crisis intervention, and support services to survivors of sexual assault and their families since 1974. Their service area extends from Carpinteria to the Santa Ynez Valley, with walk-in crisis counseling available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
